The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by a single point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, lying 36 points behind behind Norris, ended up in 17th position as his team followed a alternative strategy. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the track edges before spinning across the escape zone, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the practice, spinning around through the fast downhill corner approaching the final corner on to the main straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, just behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds behind the Australian's time.
