🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein Document Release is Divided. Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light. Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process. Questions Prompted by Redactions While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness. “People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued. A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure However, some conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions. The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured. But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack. “It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer. “New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.” Clinton Campaign Releases Statement Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment. “The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added. Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release. The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained no new information.
